Yoga for Backcare

w/ Bev Furlong

Sunday, February 26th

Noon - 3pm

$40 per person

Pre-registration required

Unlike medical therapies aimed at fixing one problem, yoga works on many levels simultaneously. The poses can increase flexibility, build muscle strength and improve balance. This is an alignment based yoga practice. Yoga postures are whole body movements, unlike traditional back exercises which isolate parts of the body to be stretched or strengthened. They are designed to integrate and benefit the entire body. Back problems involve the whole body. Many factors may contribute to a bad back – tight muscles and/or weak muscles, poor posture, obesity, emotional stress, scoliosis, and lack of a full range of movement in the peripheral joints, (shoulders and hips). No back problem can be isolated from the rest of the body. The poses we will be doing will have the wonderful ability to work several areas at the same time. It’s never too late to start doing yoga. Remember: Don’t let what you can’t do interfere with what you can do!

Bev is a 200 RYT and finishing the requirements for the 500 hrs. Having practiced yoga since 1997. mostly Ashtanga based, Bev has found that specifically practicing alignment-based yoga could control back pain and arrest the progression of her own scoliosis. Bev has studied with Alison West and Deborah Wolk from Yoga Union Center for Backcare and Scoliosis in NYC and has completed Elise Browning Miller’s Yoga for Scoliosis Teacher training.

'Kira Willey releases a Must Have Yoga Songs for Kids CD!  As a yoga instructor and children’s yoga instructor, what hit me first is how upbeat and up tempo the music was. I have always looked for music that allows kids to move around for part of class, a hard thing to accomplish as most movement-appropriate music has narration over it that ruins the track. I have several CDs from varying Children’s Yoga trainings that go in the complete opposite direction, too calm and sedate and too much indoctrination into yogic philosophy. I do believe relaxing music and chanting have their place in a kids’ class but let’s be honest, the under-7 set (and those above it even) want to and should move! It is easy to envision parents, care providers and others utilizing this CD instead of turning on the television to get kids moving. Thank goodness for bright spots on the horizon like Kira Willey!'

Slow Flow w/ Ruth Huron

Sunday, April 1st
Noon - 2:30pm
$25 per person
Pre-registration required.

Why do you practice yoga?
What are you looking for?
What difference does it make in your life?
Do you find yourself fiercely racing through your yoga practice in an intense quest toward the finish line because you love the way you feel when you're done?
The world is spinning madly trying to pull us into its vortex of chaos. This chaos follows us. Can you feel it?
We often bring this energy onto our yoga practice and miss the essence of why we are in practice in the first place.
In this slow- motion vinyasa style workshop we will explore the in between by slowing down, turning inward, breathing deeply and listening and in doing so infuse integrity into our practice. We will allow the chatter to fade and clarity to come.
From this clarity we will find calm, presence and peace in every pose.
Without thought the answers will come.

Ruthie Huron began her life changing journey with yoga in 1997. She was first introduced to an Ashtanga yoga practice by Erica Sulzer, co-owner of Emmaus Yoga.
A fierce curiosity has led Ruthie to study and practice with many inspirational teachers. She did her first teacher training in 1998 with David Swenson. She went on to study further with David and other Ashtanga mentors such as Nancy Gilgoff, Manju Jois and David Wlliams. Her yoga practice led her to teacher trainings with Seane Corn, Bryan Kest, Baron Baptiste and Jonny Kest.
Ruthie uses the resources from her many trainings over the years to teach to the energy within the room. She encourages a balance emphasizing the foundations of stability and alignment with the breath, locks and gaze.
